more on inspiration

i was asked to write a bit about my inspiration lately - something i always find quite difficult to elaborate on because i draw references from all over the place and over quite a long period of time. inspiration mostly drips in by osmosis and it's only much later when i look at my work in conjunction with all the references i've collected that things start to click into place. i'm also at the beginning of a body of work and still very much experimenting with my style. that said, i got out some of the publications that i've enjoyed looking at over the last five years or so and found some strong tie-ins with what i'm working on now.

rex ray - is well known for his graphic design and collages that draw inspiration from handmade craft. images from rex ray: art and design

i've shown this image before, but i love a simplistic, naive type of knitwear. cardigan by yohji yamamoto. image from knitwear in fashion.

i also love vintage, english-y type of knitwear. image from selvedge issue 32

embroidery and stitching - the more raw and naive the better for me. next two images from embroidery italian fashion.

and for colour, i'm mostly drawn to a 1920s or 1930s palette often seen in textiles or interiors. this image from 20th century pattern design.
